TL;DR
Everyone blamed AI for killing junior and mid-level jobs…

But the charts tell a different story:
The real executioner?
The post-COVID hiring binge - and its equally sharp collapse.
Hiring Boom, Rate Shock, and Bust
AI isn’t killing entry level jobs (today)…
Over-hiring did.

📉 From 2022–2025, mid-level and entry level hiring fell across every sector -
Not just “AI-vulnerable” ones.
In fact, a Stanford analysis shows only a 13% sharper drop in AI-exposed roles, but a 36% drop across all junior positions during this time.
The full breakdown is just below - don’t miss it! 😉

The Timeline That Proves It

🟥 The “Rage Against the Machine” chart (SSRN 2025) shows junior headcount plummeting post-GPT 3.5, but the decline began WAY before AI’s mass adoption.
Here’s what actually happened:
2020–2021: ZIRP (Zero Interest Rate Policy) and stimulus = aggressive hiring surge
2022: Fed hikes rates = immediate belt-tightening
2023–2025: AI becomes the scapegoat, but junior cuts already happened
Where Did Mid-Level / Entry Go?
New engineer headcount data from April 2021 to April 2025 shows:
📉 Steep drop in early-career (26–30) and mid-career (35–40) engineers
🔺 Steady growth in seniors (50+) and late mid-career (41–49)
Why?
Juniors were deemed “expensive to ramp, slow to ship.”
Companies kept expensive seniors…
But stopped training up anyone else.

So, What's Really Driving This Shift?
🟢 It’s a macro story, not a tech story.

👉 Entry-level hiring collapsed before GPT-4 dropped
👉 Interest rates > talent investments
👉 CFOs went cost-first, not growth-first
Even confidence in job-seeking tanked:
“Extremely/Very confident” jobseekers dropped from 35% (2021) → 20% (2025)
“Not confident at all” surged from 25% → 45%

The Structural Risk
When entry/mid level employees disappears:
Succession pipelines die
Seniors get stretched thin
Knowledge transfer halts
Burnout accelerates
And the worst part?
When growth returns -you’re unprepared.
There’s no one to promote.
The Hiring Strategy Shift
To survive the middle collapse, smart orgs are:
Creating bridge roles (associate PMs, L3–L4 engineers) with strong mentorship baked in.
Outsourcing onboarding through staffing partners who specialize in early-talent enablement.
Using apprenticeship pipelines to rebuild the ladder from the bottom up.
To Sum It Up:
Junior hiring didn’t die because of AI - it collapsed because of macro-tightening.
AI just made it worse.
Ignore your mid-level roles, and you’ll burn out your senior staff…
And To Wrap It Up…
You can’t scale a company with just VPs and Executives.
Rebuilding the middle isn’t optional - it’s your only path to sustainable growth.
Let the other guys chase AI unicorns.
When the hiring tide turns - you’ll be the one ready 😎
